1989 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo
Not all that many late-'80s offerings have had the good fortune to come through the decades looking and running as fresh as this 1989 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo. Of course, having logged an unusually low 24,000 miles during its lifetime sure helps. Still dressed in what is almost certainly its original white paint, it's free of any noticeable dents or dings, and a brief session at the hands of a skilled detailer would take it to an even higher level. If this classic Olds doesn't quite look familiar at first, there's a good reason for that. Few fourth-generation Toronados were made in Trofeo configuration, so the combination of monochromatic paint, distinctive badging and modified lighting this '89 wears isn't seen on the road too often these days. As well as the exterior of this Olds has fared, the interior has done at least as well, if not better. Its factory, Very Dark Sapphire leather interior, with bucket seats as comfortable as they come, is in unusually good shape for a car from this era, with no rips or tears in sight and, in fact, few signs of wear, even on the most heavily trafficked touch points. The door panels are in equally good condition, as is the carpeting below and, as you direct your attention forward, you'll find a full complement of factory gauges looking back at you through clear lenses. The overall level of functionality inside these doors is impressive and the only two exceptions, the AM/FM/Cassette stereo, which powers on but doesn't lock onto stations well, and a factory air conditioning system that blows strong but not particularly cold, are both easily remedied. The electronically fuel-injected, 3.8-liter V6 that powers this seldom-seen ride remains in top form after all these years. It fires up right on cue, idles very smoothly and offers plenty of acceleration. The four-speed automatic transmission lined up right behind it includes an overdrive gear to keep RPMs down at highway speeds and shifts with no issues. With an upgraded suspension that comes by way of its upper-tier Trofeo designation, it's a nimble handler as well. Power steering makes for low-effort navigation, while four-wheel power ABS disc brakes bring its quartet of 15" factory-style wheels, wrapped with Michelin tires, to safe, reassuringly solid stops.
