1970 Ford Torino GT 429 Cobra Jet
VIN: 0A38N167882
Selected as the Motor Trend Car of the Year, the second generation 1970 Ford Torino was a very successful car off the production line. Inspired by supersonic aircraft, the car was designed in the “coke bottle” fashion with an imposing front and rear stance and narrow at the waist.
The performance model of the Torino line, the Torino Cobra, was housed in the 2-door SportsRoof with it’s raked windshield line and an even flatter fastback roofline. More important, the drive train carried the day on this Muscle Car from the hallowed halls of Detroit.
Production numbers from Ford indicate that only 7675 Torino GT Cobra were made. This fine example presented at auction, VIN 0A38N167882, breaks down as follows:
· 0 – 1970 Model Year
· A – Production in Atlanta
· 38 – Torino Cobra
· N – 429 4V “Thunder Jet”
· 167882 – Production Sequence
· CA167882 – Number Stamped on the 429 Thunder Jet Engine
The Data Tag breaks down as follows:
· 63H – 2-dr Fastback Coupe
· T – Red
· 3A – Cloth and Vinyl Interior
· 9 – 3.25 Limited Slip Differential
· 6 – Close Ratio 4sp Manual Transmission
· 25 – Richmond, VA DSO
Subjected to a complete restoration through a professional body shop, this stunning car shows exceptionally well inside, outside and underneath and is reported to have been featured in a GOODFELLAS publication having received an award for “Best Ford”. Having participated in a Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour, the car was enhanced for drivability with 3.70 rear end gears. The current owner swapped out the “Top Loader” transmission for a TREMEC TKO 600, further enhancing it’s driving pleasure. Both the original 3.25 gears and 4 speed transmission are available with the car. The 429 Thunder Jet, original to the car (as verified by engine stamp matching the VIN, powers this car very well!
Few of these cars survived the road (or their drivers) over the years, having been prone to hot rodding and rust issues. This beautiful example is an excellent addition to any collection or suite of drivers!
The Car has been consigned to the Sioux Falls Classic Car Auction hosted by the Classic Car Auction Group. The auction is Saturday, August 1st, 2026, with live and online bidding.
