By 1971, the Pontiac Firebird Formula had earned a quiet reputation...delivering Trans Am-level performance in a more understated package. But this car? It throws that subtlety right out the window. This fully restored and reimagined Firebird Formula keeps just enough of its original character to stay grounded, while radically upping the ante everywhere else. Less than 500 miles have been logged since completion, and the car remains showroom fresh from its full restomod overhaul.
The body was stripped and reworked with new sheet metal where needed, including freshly mini-tubbed rear quarters, and refinished in a sharp white hue that pays tribute to the car's original Cameo White build. Flush-fit front and rear glass adds a modern edge without disrupting the mostly stock-appearing trim, which still includes original-style bumpers, turn signals, sport mirrors, and the signature nostril-style hood scoops. The Firebird sits with purpose on staggered 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Forgeline S03P wheels wrapped in sticky Pirelli P-Zeros, 285mm up front and 325mm out back.
Raise the hood, by way of strut-assisted billet aluminum hinges, and reveal a modern 6.0L LS2 V8. Custom valve covers, billet pulleys, and a fabricated fresh-air intake lend it a finished, high-performance look, while exhaust pulses exit through long-tube Hedman headers and a custom stainless dual-exhaust system with Pypes Race Pro mufflers. Cooling is handled by a Ron Davis aluminum radiator with dual electric fans. Power is routed through an American Powertrain supplied Tremec TKX 5-speed manual transmission featuring a hydraulic clutch. A GM 12-bolt rear is fitted with a Moser aluminum diff cover with upgraded hardware to improve rigidity. Final drive is handled by 3.55 gears with a limite-slip differential, offering a balanced mix of acceleration and cruising efficiency.
Underneath, the chassis has been completely reworked for handling and ride quality. The front features a double A-arm setup with Ridetech control arms, while the rear benefits from a 4-link system. Coilovers at all four corners provide tunable suspension performance. Power four-wheel disc brakes handle stopping duty, with 6-piston Wilwood calipers up front and 4-piston units out back, complete with an internal parking brake system. Power steering makes it easy to enjoy around town or on the open road.
Inside, the Formula's interior is completely restored with a clean, modern vibe. High-bolster bucket seats with integrated headrests provide comfort and support, while the 3-spoke steering wheel features a custom 'Rising Phoenix' horn button as a nod to its namesake. The carbon fiber-style gauge cluster houses a full Speartech digital gauge setup, complete with a Livorsi control panel and integrated air conditioning controls. A custom center console features an American Powertrain shifter and integrated storage. And a Custom Autosound digital AM/FM radio with AUX input keeps the traditional look inside, but provides some modern connectivity.
This '71 Formula is the real deal, a fully dialed-in restomod that honors its roots while pushing performance, comfort, and reliability far beyond anything offered in that era. From its flush glass and aggressive stance to the modern drivetrain and coilover suspension, this Pontiac brings the past into the present with precision and style.
