The smallest car from the European market, the SMART ForTwo by Mercedes, received a mid-life cycle impulse in 2003 and restyled this tiny car. The design team did an excellent job. New headlight design, 3 lamp taillights, and this one has a convertible top! Roomy cabin for 2, front trunk space, and GREAT gas mileage!
This little car was not officially sold in the US until 2008, but some models were imported by third parties and modified to meet DOT and EPA standards, so this is a rare example. 2003 specific data is not publicly published, but it is believed that only a few hundred 2003 models made it into the US, making it a collector’s piece. The conversions were expensive, adding $10K or more to the original cost of the vehicle.
