1935 Yellow Coach Model 727 Transit Bus

The 1935 Yellow Coach was a landmark vehicle in American transit, produced by the Yellow Truck & Coach Manufacturing Company, (controlled by General Motors). It paved the way for modern transit with pioneering models like the classic double decker,(Model 720/735), and early parlor coaches.

For auction, a 1935 Yellow Coach Model 727 transit bus with unknown mileage. Yellow Coach Manufacturing Co was formally established in 1923 as a subsidiary of John Hertz's Yellow Cab Company. In 1931, Yellow Coach introduced its 700 series buses, featuring one of the first bus designs to mount the engine in the rear.
Exterior
A completely flat front augments this bus's breadbox shape on which the White and Turquoise paint provides some flowing lines and side accents to mask the boxy design. In profile, the paint mimics the fender shapes of the era while the roof sandwiches the bus with full white coverage. Out back, small and low tail lights come at the end of flat panels and a turn signal unit is on one side and additional red lights protrude from the roof. Overall, the single stage paint is in good condition with some fading and areas that appear a bit more oxidized. The 20-inch wheels are painted white while chrome bumpers and the grille provide the only polished metal features.
Interior
Black vinyl seats, available for 18 patrons, are in nice condition with high backs and padded headrests. The driver sits in the usual position with a wooden engine cover to the right, and this area shows some age. The inner walls are also painted turquoise and white.
Drivetrain
Under that engine cover is a 450ci GMC inline 6-cylinder, rated at 154 horsepower and fueled via a 1-barrel carburetor. It's backed by a Banker 4-speed automatic transmission that sends power all the way back to the rear axle containing 4.85 gears.
Undercarriage
Drums occupy the airbrake system and a single exhaust utilizes a stock style muffler to expel spent gas. Suspension is comprised of leaf springs front and rear.
Between 1932 and 1937, the Yellow Coach company produced more than 50 variants of passenger buses with the 727 being near the middle of the production line. Rare today, this auction presents a unique opportunity to own a piece of American transit history.
