For 1972, Plymouth changed the GTX from being a separate model to what was essentially an engine option package (which featured the mighty 440 V8) for the Road Runner. So this means it was possible to walk into your Plymouth dealer and drive out in a rumbling 1972 Plymouth Road Runner GTX. Here we have one of these ultra-rare birds that is just out of long-term storage. Originally from Washington State, it boasts 80% of its original paint. The interior is simply stunning as well, and very original. Highlights include the numbers-matching 440 4-barrel V8, a pistol grip 4-speed, a Dana 60 Sure-Grip rear end with a 3.91 gear, the factory N96 Air-Grabber option, black-out hood treatment, Tuff steering wheel, dual chrome racing mirrors, strobe stripes, AM radio and center console. Did we mention that the car has just 23,137 actual miles on it, which is complemented by an original title and broadcast sheet? When we say this car is rare we mean it -- this Road Runner GTX is one of just 219 with the 440-4-barrel V8 and a 4-speed transmission. As stated earlier, the car wears mostly original paint on its arrow-straight and rock-solid body. So far, we have determined that, through our paint meter readings that there has been only 20% paint work on this car's all-original body. Given that, this Road Runner would still be considered Survivor class, as it would meet the requirement of having 80% original paint on the car. And that interior looks like a page out of the 1972 brochure. Of course this car is a thrill to drive with that potent 440 V8 under the hood and a pistol grip shifter under your right hand. It runs and drives as you'd expect of a very-low mileage, well-kept car. If this one doesn't check all the boxes for a Mopar maniac, then we don't know what does!
