Built exclusively in Canada from 1946 through mid-1948, the Mercury 114 model line combined Ford bodies with upscale Mercury trim and bridged the size and price gap between Ford and Mercury. This extremely rare 1948 Mercury 114X Sedan Coupe is named after its 114-inch wheelbase length, as a companion model to Mercury’s larger 118 model line. The “X" indicates that it is a top-of-the-line model, similar to the upscale trim and in passenger amenities of Ford’s Super DeLuxe models. According to Ford Motor Company, just 2,716 Mercury 114s were built in all for the 1948 model year, prior to the introduction of the redesigned Ford models in June 1948.
Sporting a glossy black paint finish, this rare 1948 Mercury 114X Sedan Coupe is understood to be one of as few as 365 examples produced in this body style. In addition to the wonderful Art Deco-inspired trim, including the stylized “Mercury" grille mascot and emblems, this 114X is complemented by gleaming chrome bumpers and accents, plus green painted steel wheels mounting bright trim rings, “Mercury" scripted hub caps, and period style blackwall bias-ply tires. Accessories include a steel Fulton sun shade – a popular 1940s-50s automotive accessory, plus a chrome Philips combination spot light/mirror to the driver’s side of the vehicle. A proper 239 CI “flathead" V-8 engine delivers power with a 3-speed column-shifted manual transmission and the underside, frame and suspension appear in unmodified and maintained factory condition. The interior is tidy, inviting, and in original-appearing order and retains original-appearing green and grey two-tone patterned upholstery. In addition to the aircraft-style, twin-pod dash insert housing the speedometer and clock inside individual pods, this rare Canadian-market Mercury is further equipped with a factory under-dash heater, courtesy lights, cloth passenger grab handles, and swing-open rear-quarter windows.
