Description:
This 1981 HMV FreeWay is one of a claimed 700 examples manufactured by High Mileage Vehicles of Burnsville, Minnesota, between 1979 and 1982. Refurbishment work completed under previous ownership involved repainting the fiberglass bodywork orange as well as replacing the acrylic windows. Power is supplied by a 453cc four-stroke single mated to a continuously variable transmission. The vehicle rides on 12 ITP wheels and is further equipped with a central headlight, a single left-side door, a removable roof panel, a rear hatch, a single fixed-back seat, and a push-button radio. Service involved replacing the carburetor, repairing the fuel pump wiring, and servicing the drum brakes. Following the 1973 OPEC oil embargo and subsequent oil crises, engineer Dave Edmonson developed the FreeWay, a three-wheeled microcar featuring a single seat and an enclosed cabin. The vehicle incorporated fiberglass bodywork over a tubular steel frame and was available in gas, diesel, and electric versions, though no diesel variants were produced. It is estimated that the standard 12-horsepower gasoline engine could reach 84-miles per gallon, while the later 16-horsepower Tecumseh engine was claimed to achieve 70-miles per gallon.
Interior:
The cockpit houses a single fixed-back bucket seat trimmed in black and gray vinyl accompanied by gray carpets. The vehicle is further equipped with a push-button radio as well as a rear storage area that is open to the interior and accessible through the rear hatch. The windshield, side windows, pop-out rear quarter windows, and rear hatch are constructed of acrylic and were also replaced in the course of the project.
Exterior:
The FreeWay was available in either red, yellow, or blue, and this example was repainted orange with multi-color stripes and FreeWay decals as part of the aforementioned refurbishment completed under previous ownership. Further exterior details include a removable roof panel, a single door on the left, a central sealed-beam headlight, a windshield wiper, driving lamps, black steel bumpers, and a side-exit exhaust. Black-finished 12" ITP alloy wheels with polished spokes and black inserts are mounted with 215/40 Backlash tires. The FreeWay features a tubular frame with a three-wheel independent suspension.
Drivetrain:
The 453cc Tecumseh four-stroke single sends power to the rear wheel through a belt-driven continuously variable transmission and a drive chain. Work performed included service, and replacing carb, fuel lines, and other fuel components.
