1932 Ford Pickup Truck

Description:

This 1932 Ford pickup represents a rare intersection of authenticity, craftsmanship, and mechanical ambition. Built with precision and invited to be displayed in Builders Row at the 2024 NSRA Street Rod Nationals, it stands as a thoughtfully executed hot rod that respects its roots while pushing well beyond period limitations. The foundation begins with an unaltered original Henry Ford steel cab, paired with a Brookville chassis, steel fenders, and boards, creating a structure that stays true to original proportions while benefiting from modern precision.

The build was completed by Original Tin Customs and Classics in Salisbury, North Carolina, a shop known for disciplined craftsmanship and an appreciation for traditional hot rod values. The truck is finished in a deep, rich red laid down by ESP Motorcars, also of Salisbury, NC. The paint shows excellent depth and consistency across the cab, fenders, and bed, highlighting the '32's timeless lines. The stance is spot on, thanks to SoCal suspension components sourced through Brookville, delivering a planted look with proper geometry underneath. Rolling stock comes courtesy of WheelSmith wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza tires up front, and wide 305mm Nitto NT555 out back.

The attention to detail extends to the bed, which was constructed by a log home builder and restorer with experience in wooden boat construction. Formed from solid Sapele wood, the boards are not laminated and were sealed with penetrating epoxy to protect from moisture intrusion. The bed is also hinged to lift, allowing access to the rear axle and suspension, blending show-quality presentation with real-world serviceability.

At the heart of the build is a Don Ferguson"built Ardun flathead V8, an overhead-valve conversion that transformed the traditional flathead into something revolutionary in its day and remains deeply respected today. The engine is believed to be approximately 288 cubic inches, according to the original builder, and was dyno tested at 303 horsepower and 287 lb-ft of torque at the crank, exceptional output for a naturally-aspirated, flathead-based combination. Power is delivered through a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission into a Winters quick-change rear end with 3.78 gearing, all supported by a Brookville chassis fitted with SoCal suspension components and a 3-link ladder-bar rear for proper road manners. Braking is handled with a period-correct approach, using front disc brakes disguised as drums and large rear drum brakes, preserving vintage appearance while improving stopping performance.

Inside, the cabin reflects the same craftsmanship seen throughout the build. Sewn Tight Interiors of Louisville, Kentucky finished the interior in rich leather, centered around a custom laminated Bubinga wood dash that adds warmth and upscale contrast. Classic Instruments gauges provide a clean, traditional layout, while a custom center console and leather-wrapped headliner with integrated overhead detail tie the cabin together visually. The result is an interior that feels high-quality and built to be used.

This is not a tribute or a loose interpretation. It is a carefully executed 1932 Ford pickup, built with intention, accepted by the NSRA, and powered by a properly engineered Ardun flathead delivering respectful performance. The result is a truck that is capable of winning shows and drives with authority well beyond what its 1930s origins would suggest.
