The C3 Corvette is one of the most recognizable shapes in American automotive history, and the 1974 is a particularly significant one. This was the first year Chevrolet replaced the chrome bumpers front and rear with smooth body-colored urethane, giving the car a cleaner, more modern look that has aged incredibly well. It was also the last year for true dual exhaust and the last Corvette built without a catalytic converter, which makes it a milestone year sitting right at the edge of two different eras. The 1974 Stingray was a massive sales success despite a brutal year for the auto industry overall. While car sales across the country dropped more than 12 percent due to the gas crisis, Corvette sales actually went up, climbing from around 30,000 to over 37,500 units. People simply were not willing to give up on the Corvette, even when times were tough. That says a lot about what this car means to people.
