Floyd Clymer Indian Motocycles Sign
Floyd Clymer, born in 1895, was a pioneer in the sport of motorcycling, was a racer, a motorcycle dealer and distributor, a magazine publisher, a racing promoter, an author, and a motorcycle manufacturer. Best known today for his vast catalog of automotive books, Clymer’s influence on the motorcycle world — particularly Indian — was equally important.
By the late 1920s, his Denver-based Floyd Clymer, Inc. was one of the largest motorcycle dealerships in the West, distributing Indian, Excelsior, and Henderson. He later acquired the rights to the Indian name and is credited with keeping the Indian name alive up to and beyond his untimely passing in 1970.
This sign presented at auction is believed to have been displayed in Clymer's Denver Indian Dealership. The bottom right of the sign displays "Hedstrom Sign Co., Springfield Mass.". Oscar Hedstrom joined the "Indian Motocycle Co." in 1900 and the first Indian prototype was then built and completed on May 25, 1901 by Hedstrom.
