1961 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz

Description:

This example underwent a rotisserie restoration in 2021, completing in 2022. The complete nut and bolt restoration was undertaken in Hungary under the supervision of the previous owner to honor his father, who owned the car since 1978. But that wasn't the first time this Biarritz lived overseas. This car was sold new in Holland and served as mascot of American Luxury for nearly two decades before being sold to gentleman from Hungary, where it continued as the Standard of the World, passing from father to son nearly forty more. When the current owner re-imported it to U.S. soil last year, it was the first time this Cadillac touched home ground since the Kennedy Administration.

The restoration included taking this big, beautiful boulevard cruiser down to bare metal and building it back up again. Everything mechanical from the drivetrain and suspension was likewise rebuilt to "as factory" condition. Everything works, from the ice-cold AC to the signal-seeking radio. The current owner sourced, rebuilt, and installed the OE correct brake master cylinder (see updated photo).

The factory original 390 cubic inch V8 mated to the factory Hydramatic transmission were both tore down and restored to OEM specifications, still producing 325 horsepower in near silent luxury. This time, optimized to run on modern pump gas. The engine bay was restored to high standard of detail, making for a proud moment to lift the hood at your local Cars and Coffee event.

As with any Eldorado Biarritz produced in 1961, this example is fully loaded with power equipment: power top, 6-way power seat, power windows (including electric vent windows), power steering and brakes, air conditioning and Autronic Eye are all present and accounted for. The restoration shop took a preservationist approach to the interior, retaining the patina of the original chrome and stainless brightwork. The signature Biarritz ostrich leather interior leather is likewise original, still supple yet showing some signs of wear.

While the car was originally spec'd in paint code 16, Aleutian Gray, things are always better in black. The Biarritz's extra dose of luxurious chrome trim on the body sides. exterior chrome and stainless are restored and polished to a mirrored gleam, fitting well with glass smooth finish of mile-long slab sides and fabulous fins finished in Ebony Black. The exterior glass is likewise in very good condition, with no significant chips, cracks, or blemishes.

The undercarriage is also fully restored, frame power coated, floors are body colored black. All suspension assemblies have been restored. The exhaust system has been replaced with factory correct components where original pipes could not be reconditioned. All brakes and fuel lines are new. Wheels are restored originals and tires are OE correct appearing radials, combining the factory original look with modern day ride, handling, and safety. While not golf-course Concourse ready, it does show better than most any other driven example we've inspected.

The convertible top is new and operates flawlessly (see video). If you are looking for a turn-key, road ready Cadillac to take on the historical highways of America, this is your Eldorado. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

MODEL HISTORY

It's not surprising that during the midcentury era in America, Cadillac was considered the ultimate symbol of domestic status. The Cadillac brand boasted striking designs, impressive power, and exceptional craftsmanship, making their top models the embodiment of success for American drivers. In 1961, under the direction of Bill Mitchell, Cadillac underwent a restyling that resulted in sleeker, wider, and more refined vehicles compared to their previous offerings, which were known for their extensive chrome and massive fins. The most notable transformation could be seen in the flagship model of the lineup: the Eldorado Biarritz.

This Eldorado Biarritz Convertible is one of only 1,450 units produced for that model year. It showcases streamlined sides, reduced tailfins, forward-swept bumpers, rear fender skirts, and an elegant, curved windscreen. These design elements encompass everything desirable about midcentury American aesthetics, presented in a package that is sleeker and somewhat less flamboyant compared to its predecessors.
