1967 Chevrolet Camaro Hardtop

Description:

1967 Chevrolet Camaro Hardtop

The 1967 Camaro appeared on the scene and the General instantly became a big player in the pony car wars. The Camaro had gotten ahead of the curve and was now a leader in the style department because the car already looked like a car from the early 70's even though that era was still 4 years in the future in October 1966. I can recall the first time I saw a first-generation Camaro in the October 1966 Popular Science new car preview edition. The 1967 Camaro was the star attraction when it debuted in the fall of 1966 and it gave the General an instant classic in the pony car battle.

For consignment, a "worked" first generation Camaro that had its restoration finished up about 5 years ago. Maintaining its original timeless looks, but now with a consignor stated 396ci V8, with a 3-speed automatic transmission and upgraded for more power and efficiency and sporting about 500 miles on the rebuilt drivetrain. This car presents in nicely restored condition, and is a wonderful example with good paint, chrome, and larger engine. Read ON!

Exterior
The newer versions of the Camaro are nice and all with their neoprene bumpers etc etc etc, however there is something about the simplicity of design with these earlier Camaro models. A thin grille and a nice small bumper with actual chrome on it just below, which is just not seen on the cars of today. Showing with a nicely applied yellow color change respray covering the steel panels, which are minding their gaps very nicely, but there are minor faults. These can be summed up in the terms of stone chips, inclusions in the finish, and a few very minor dings. Black stripes race up from the header panel, over the cowl induction reverse scooped hood and finish off on the trunk lid. 350 and crossed flag badging, a rocker chromed strip, nicely restored bumpers, and deep dish 15-inch polished American Racing wheels wrapped with blackwall skinny and fat radials, and ladies and gentlemen, we are ready to go. Up top is crystal clear glass all highlighted by expertly polished molding. Oh, and let's rock and roll a little bit with a slightly raised rear suspension, and a super cool striped spoiler on the trunk lid. Some SS badging for the rear along with the simple horizontal tail lights and another small bumper with lower guards is seen below. Do not leave out the iconic blacked out and SS 350 badged eggcrate grille up front and chin spoiler below, just pure Camaro...Light it UP!

Interior
A swing of the door and we are met with near showroom door panels in black molded vinyl with shiny window cranks, door handles, and shiny gloss black sills. These are the deluxe panels with molded armrests, snappy Camaro badging, and black carpeted lowers. We're going in and plopping ourselves on the nicely covered black vinyl buckets with smooth bolsters and tuck and roll inserts with white delineation piping which grab you when you have a seat in them. Or grab your high school sweetheart and have some fun on the rear bench, which appears unused also in black vinyl with matching white piping. The angled dash front has AutoMeter carbon fiber faced gauges installed with the deeply inset pod and is fronted by a black rimmed 4 spoke Grant GT steering wheel. In the center we note a custom flame etched aluminum insert now holding a 4-some of black face AutoMeter supporting gauges. A black plastic console races between the buckets and holds an exposed Hurst shifter sporting a traditional white ball topper within reach of the driver within more flame etched aluminum. Noted are very nice headliner and black carpet showing very little faults and fade and to keep things extra safe we note a nicely installed and well hidden 6 point roll bar. Dream ON!

Drivetrain
Our biggest changes have taken place here where things have been blinged up to the nines with a consignor-stated rebuilt and bored .060 over 396 ci V8 engine. It sits within the nicely restored yellow engine bay and presents with a black painted block, flame etched and polished aluminum valve covers, and a flame etched air cleaner with fully pleated air filter. This mill ingests its air and fossils through a Holley 4-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold before sending the mixture to the engine via a pair of cast iron cylinder heads. All this power is put through a consignor-stated B&M 3-speed automatic transmission and back to a 12-bolt rear axle with 4.11 gearing and Positraction. Crank that BABY with only 500 miles on the all redone drivetrain!

Undercarriage
No issues seen here, just straight unadulterated steel with only surface rust seen. Subframe connectors have been added to stiffen the chassis and headers feed down from the mill and send spent fossils to the rear of the car via Flowmaster mufflers. A power disc brake conversion was performed up all around and leaf spring rear suspension with traction bars keeps the rear firmly planted while independent front coil spring suspension braves those fast corners...Scrrrrrrreeetttch!

Drive-Ability
A good driver, quick starter, smooth shifter, and some good grabby brakes. The car rode smoothly, and the interior was spacious. It's great to be able to crank the windows down on a nice day and go for a spin so I can write about these fascinating cars! A few frowns showed themselves during our drive. The horn didn't blow and neither did the wipers wipe, which had the wiper motor deleted, the reverse lights did not illuminate and the fuel gauge did not read due to the sender wire being disconnected and coiled up in front of the console.

A generation 1 first year pony car, nicely restored with an upgraded engine, some added SS badging, a nice driving and sweet looking Camaro, and dig those stripes and American Racing wheels, "See the USA in your Chevrolet!"
