*1965 ERA - Shelby Cobra Recreation *The 427 Shelby Cobra is one of the most desirable and expensive vehicles in the world of classic cars. With less than 1,000 examples produced, prices go deep into the 7-figures if you wanted to put one in your garage. But, for the enthusiast who wants to experience what makes the Cobra so exciting, many manufacturers have sprung up over the last 40 years to produce replicas that give you all the driving thrills, at a fraction of the cost. This example is one of those- built in 1983, this E.R.A. Cobra is an early recreation, that has been upgraded since its production to make it as fantastic to drive, as it is to look at.Finished in an eye-catching color combination of red with white stripes, this Cobra was treated to a high-quality respray by Bel-Red Auto Rebuild in March of 2010 where all of the gaskets and weather stripping were replaced, and the car received a new windshield. Thanks to a set of polished Halibrand-style knock off wheels, the set of side exhaust snaking out from the engine bay and a chromed driver's side roll hoop, this car checks all the boxes in the looks department. Sitting behind the passenger is a LeMans-style fuel filler cap, and chrome bumpers are all key elements from the original car which look fantastic replicated here.As with an original Cobra, the interior is definitely spartan- featuring just two black vinyl bucket seats-- with 4-point racing harnesses for both. In front of the driver sits a large, 3-spoke wood rimmed steering wheel, and a suite of Smiths gauges laid out just in front of them. The shift lever features the unique canted-forward design like the original car, and a for weather, a full cabin tonneau cover and soft top with side curtains are all included.Sitting under the hood is where this car really gets exciting- an original 1966 Ford 427ci Side Oiler is just like what you would have found under the hood of the most desirable Cobras from the 1960s. The motor was rebuilt in July 2001 with 10.5:1 compression, new bearings, a Holley 650cfm carburetor on an Edelbrock aluminum intake, with matching Edelbrock aluminum performance heads. Additionally, a hotter cam with solid lifters was fitted, along with a new radiator and water pump. This would be a potent engine in a 1960s Ford Galaxie or Fairlane, but in a car as light as the Cobra it is an absolute weapon. In May 2009, the 4-speed gearbox was rebuilt and a new clutch was installed at the time. To ensure the car can handle all the power, an upgraded suspension includes larger sway bars, new rod ends and bushings around the car, and the 4-wheel disc brakes were upgraded with a Tilton master cylinder.One of the things that adds value to an original Shelby Cobra is great history- and although this car isn't an original, it does have some cool stories from throughout its life. Included with the sale is a build binder which features articles from both Motor Trend and Road and Track magazines in 1983 that were written about this car. Not many replicas can make that claim!
